Manatees

if i'm making a manatee (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/PATTpuppers.html), do i knit the tail and flippers and obsess about shaping, or do i cop out and just crochet it? this has been bugging me since i started spinning it. maybe someone commenting on the harlot's blog can help?
